Nothing is worse than struggling with a difficult controller. Problems with joysticks drifting to controller size can be frustrating. Fortunately, there are controllers on the market to suit every style of play. Regardless of your budget or your preferred genre, you can find a gamepad that will suit your needs.
The PlayStation 4 is nearing the end of its lifecycle, and that means we’ve had plenty of time for great controllers to hit the market. Here you will find the best controllers currently available for the PlayStation 4 – from elite esports-enabled gamepads to bespoke control panels for fighting games.
The DualShock 4 is included in the PlayStation 4, regardless of which bundle you want to buy. It’s one of the best controllers Sony has ever made. The face buttons are big enough to hold almost any hand size, the triggers are more actual triggers than the weirdly shaped buttons on the DualShock 3, and the analog sticks are more thumb-friendly in shape. The DualShock 4 is more than just an updated DualShock 3 though, as it packs into a neat touchpad, has a great speaker for certain game sounds, and has a release button that lets you quickly capture your best moments. The design is so great, in fact, that Sony will even use a very similar one for the PlayStation 5.
Sony doesn’t offer its own Elite controller, but you can now use the Back Button attachment to add a little more functionality to the standard device. It has two assignable buttons, a digital screen with the current configuration and the ability to save multiple presets. For only $ 29.99, this is an affordable way to upgrade your controller.
Lilyhood wired controller
If your PlayStation 4 is in a relatively small space and you are only feet away from it during gaming sessions, consider investing in a wired controller to save time on charging the DualShock 4’s battery. Lilyhood’s controller has a 6.5-foot cable that should give you plenty of wiggle room, and includes the same motion controls and touch support as the standard DualShock 4.
For the cheaper price of $ 26, you’ll miss out on the speaker and audio jack features of more expensive controllers. However, Lilyhood’s wired controller is also compatible with PlayStation 3, PC, and Android, and includes textured handles to ensure your hands don’t attract each other and don’t slip during particularly stressful or long gaming sessions. The analog sticks have similar knobs on the outside, and their deeper indentation is more like the Xbox One controller than the DualShock 4.
Hori Fighting Commander
The PlayStation 4 is one of the best platforms ever when it comes to fighting games Injustice 2 to Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 Share on the system. If you’re a dedicated fighting game gamer, the DualShock 4 is a good enough controller, but Horis Fighting Commander is the perfect option for gamers on a budget. The $ 40 controller has all of the face buttons, as well as the R1 and R2 buttons on the front of the controller in a configuration similar to the Sega Genesis, plus additional shoulder buttons, a toggle switch that works with the D-Pad as an analog stick, and a turbo button.
Just like the Xbox One version of the Fighting Commander, the PlayStation 4 controller can also be used for PC games and is compatible with the PlayStation 3 as well. Its small size means you can easily buy several when your friends come over to pounce on their bum Dragon Ball FighterZ or Street Fighter V.and it includes a 10 foot cable for easy operation.
Fighting games are based on precise input more than any other genre, and that often means an analog stick and even a D-pad just won’t cut it. In these cases the Hit Box is the answer. The controller looks similar to a fighting stick, but only contains buttons on the top and sides. You can use the same techniques with a traditional controller, but using your entire hand and fingertips to perform specific attacks results in fewer errors. For example, it might be a little trick on a gamepad to perform Ryu’s Hadoken move, but with the Hit Box it’s a breeze.
The Hit Box is also compatible with PC and has been used in high level fighting game events such as Evo. It consists of a mixture of plexiglass and metal to prevent damage on the way. Like the Fighting Commander, it’s a wired controller, but the nearly 10 feet of cable you get should be enough for all but the largest gaming setups.
The PlayStation 4 does not have its own “Elite” controller like the Xbox One, but Scuf has set itself the task of creating an alternative with the Scuf Vantage. Developed as a kind of hybrid between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One designs, it features asymmetrical analog sticks that provide a more comfortable resting position during long gaming sessions. The control pad has very distinct clicks that make it ideal for combat and platform games.
The kicker, however, is how insanely customizable the Scuf Vantage is. By removing the magnetic faceplate, you can easily remove both analog sticks, the directional pad, and even the rumble motors, and replace individual components with parts that better suit your style. Do you want longer triggers? Simply remove the supplied trigger covers and replace them in seconds.
The Scuf Vantage also has four paddles on the back and two additional buttons on either side. They can all be programmed in a snap in case you need to change something quickly. It all comes at a price – you pay $ 200 or more for the Bluetooth-enabled model – but with great battery life and even better build quality, it can definitely replace your DualShock 4.
The controller has also been improved with the revised Vantage 2. With the in-game configurations, you can automatically set up the extra buttons and paddles to support popular titles such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Border areas 3.

Razer Raiju Ultimate
Razer is known for making quality gear, and the Raiju Ultimate is no different. The controller allows for extensive customization using its mobile app, and you can even swap out the thumb pins and D-pads. There is also an option to reduce the travel time of the back triggers so that you can react in no time.
The outstanding feature of the Raiju are probably its mechatactile action buttons. These incredibly responsive buttons give the user tactile feedback with a “soft, cushioned touch”. If your typing is done properly, you don’t need to worry as Razer’s face buttons are some of the best out there.
The Raiju Ultimate works as both a wired and wireless device. If you want to take a break from gaming on your PS4, the Raiju is also compatible with most PC games. By default, it works with Steam, but download a few drivers and you’ll be able to play almost anything on your hard drive.
Nacon Revolution Unlimited
While it’s not a household name, Nacon has been making world-class gaming products for years. The Revolution Unlimited is a premium gamepad that lets you play in wired or wireless mode that offers seven hours of battery life and includes customizable joysticks with replaceable rubber toppers.
One of the most unique features of the Revolution Unlimited is the ability to change its weight. To give the gamepad more power, you can add small, detachable parts to hidden compartments in the handles of the controller. Not many other controllers offer this level of customization.
There are a number of other great features – button mapping, dead zone sensitivity, vibration intensity – and you even get a custom carrying case for the controller and all of its additional components. If you have a very special taste when it comes to gamepads, then Nacon’s range is definitely worth a look.
