There used to be times when sharing a video online was difficult. Nowadays the problem has turned into too many options. Whether you want to share a video with the world or just show it to your friends and family, the following websites will help.
YouTube: The Best Option for Most Users
YouTube is the world's largest video sharing platform. It's relatively easy to use (many video apps even support direct upload to YouTube), and you can share videos publicly or privately for free.
To upload a video, you must have a Google Account and be logged into YouTube. At the top right of the screen you will see the option to upload your video.
Click the button to go to the following screen. You can then select your video files from your computer or drag and drop your files to the upload area.
You can also upload videos privately to on YouTube, if you like. The option is not easy, let us explain it. When you click the Public drop-down menu, four options appear.
The Public option means that the uploaded video is public YouTube shows searches for matching terms. Scheduled makes a video public, but sets availability for a specific date and time.
To keep videos private, there are two options, and this is what they mean:
- Private : Private videos can only be viewed by authorized persons. You can invite up to 50 people by e-mail to watch the video. Only they can watch the video. Even if one of these members shared the video with another, they will not be able to watch the video unless you've added it to the list. Private videos will also not appear in YouTube search.
- Unlisted : Unlisted videos are quite similar to public videos, but they will not appear in YouTube search results. This is a good option if you have a video that you want to share with more than 50 people, but do not want the general public to stumble over it easily.
The privacy you want to set for each video is your decision. You can publicly upload all your videos or create a private collection just for friends and family.
Google Photos: Easier sharing, good for shared albums
Google Photos is another great way to share videos. The benefit of Google Photos is that it has a simpler user interface than YouTube, and it's easier to share through your mobile phone. It's even possible that your videos are already being uploaded to the site if you're a Google Photos user. The service also supports albums that can contain both photos and videos, making it an excellent option for sharing images and videos.
You can manually upload a video or use one of the videos from your phone automatically backed up but shared Albums give you more control and allow others to join the album, so all the pictures and videos can be organized in the same place.
You start creating a shared album.
Click the sharing icon on the next screen.
On the next screen you share the album with other email adresses. You can also create a shared link and send it to people.
In terms of privacy, there are three things you need to know about Google Photos.
- Any albums or photos shared by you can access anyone. with the link. It does not matter who sent them the link.
- You can turn this option off in shared albums so others can contribute.
- If you mark a shared album private in the future, all photos and videos will be contributed by others. Others will be deleted from the album.
Therefore, Google Photos is not as safe as YouTube if you have videos that you want to restrict access to. It's great to be able to put together videos and photos into albums, and it can be fun when other people contribute to their contribution.
Facebook: Great if you (or the people you're sharing) are already on Facebook One of the easiest ways to share a video is to upload it to Facebook. Most people have a Facebook account, so you can easily share your video with everyone. In the post screen, select Photo / Video to upload the video. By default, the video's privacy settings match the settings you've set for your posts. So, if your status updates are only showing to your friends, so will your video.
You can optimize this by setting privacy options for individual posts. For example, if you publicly post to Facebook by default, you can still publish a private video by clicking the drop-down menu for that post and selecting a different privacy option.
If you have doubts about who can watch your video, Facebook has put together a helpful guide you can go through.
If you find this complicated, you can create a Facebook group instead, and upload your video there. Only the people you accept as members of the group can see the videos uploaded there.
Vimeo: Good for Professional Videos
Vimeo is a video sharing platform similar to YouTube. The difference is that Vimeo is generally used by professional video artists to show their work. However, you can use Vimeo to upload your home videos or any other videos. Vimeo does not serve ads and is supported by professional developers who pay a subscription fee to host their videos.
There is also a free plan, but with some limitations. For example, you are limited to 500MB uploads per week and 5GB total. Also, you can not use the free plan to upload videos to a company (including videos that contain any form of advertising). Paid plans start at $ 7 a month and go up to $ 75 a month. Detailed limitations of the free plan are listed in Vimeo's help documents.
Vimeo also supports the privacy of uploaded videos. There are many privacy options, most of which are even available to free members, including the option to password protect your videos.
For more information, see Privacy Settings on the Vimeo Summary Page.
Cloud Storage: Good When Others Need to Download Your Video
There are numerous cloud storage providers that you can use to share videos, including Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox. As a demonstration we use Google Drive as an example.
The idea of organizing your video is the same on all cloud storage platforms. You can create a folder, add your videos, and then share the folder with the people you want. You can share individual files, but it's almost always better to have a folder. In the case of Google Drive, add your video to a folder and then click the drop-down menu next to the folder name to see the sharing option.
The folder can then be shared in three ways.
- Public : The folder is indexed by Google, and anyone on the Internet can find and view it.
- Shared with selected people : You can enter e-mail addresses of people for whom you want to share the folder. You can also control whether more people can be added to the sharing pool.
- Shared for a link : This creates a unique link to the folder, and anyone who has access to the link can view the contents of the folder. The rest of your Google Drive content will not be shared.
Other cloud storage vendors may handle sharing differently, so read the documentation carefully to understand the difference.
An important point in using cloud storage is that most cloud providers do not let you watch the video online. You and the people you're sharing the video with are likely to need to download the video to a computer or cell phone and then watch it. If what people want is natural, then cloud sharing is a great option.
