More than six months after Taylor was killed in her apartment when police executed a “knock-free” search warrant, the city is ready to pay for its highest settlement to date, a city spokeswoman told CNN.
The city previously paid $ 8.5 million for the unlawful conviction of Edwin Chandler, who sat nine years in prison for murder in 1993 before being exonerated, CNN subsidiary WLKY reported.
Cities across the country previously struck currency agreements after high-profile police shootouts. Cleveland agreed to pay $ 6 million to Tamir Rice’s family, and New York City agreed to pay Eric Garner’s family $ 5.9 million.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has represented the families of several victims of police brutality ̵
1; including George Floyd and Jacob Blake – believes Taylor’s settlement is one of the largest sums ever paid for a black woman killed by police in the United States.
While it’s unclear where the payout to Taylor’s family ranks among all police malpractice lawsuits in the nation, here are other large payments that came from police shootings in recent years:
The city of Minneapolis announced a $ 20 million settlement last year after Justine Ruszczyk passed away in 2017 – the largest settlement in the city’s history.
Ruszczyk, 40, had called 911 to report a possible attack in the alley behind her house when she was shot dead by former Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor who responded to her call.
Ruszczyk’s death in 2017 attracted a lot of attention in the United States and her native Australia. She had moved to Minneapolis to be with her fiancé and was killed a month before their wedding.
Noor was convicted of third-degree murder and manslaughter. In June, a Minnesota judge sentenced him to 12½ years in prison. Noor has appealed the conviction, CNN subsidiary WCCO reported.
Chicago local officials approved a $ 16 million settlement in 2018 after a black woman was shot and killed by police while officers responded to a fault call.
Bettie Jones, 55, and her 19-year-old neighbor, were shot dead in an incident in 2015. The teen’s father told CNN he hoped the police would help his son when he called 911. Instead, an officer shot the teen in a Chicago apartment building after Jones reportedly responded to either a knock or a ring.
When police arrived, the teenager stormed down the stairs with a baseball bat, CNN subsidiary WLS reported, and an officer opened fire.
Jones was “accidentally beaten and tragically killed,” Chicago police said at the time.
City officials approved the payment of $ 16 million to Jones’ family, which is considered to be one of the largest police shooting settlements in city history, CNN subsidiary WBBM and the Chicago Tribune reported.
A 2018 jury ruled in favor of the family of a black woman shot dead by police in Baltimore County, Maryland, and awarded more than $ 37 million in a civil lawsuit.
Korryn Gaines, 23, was shot dead in August 2016 after an hour-long argument with Baltimore County police. You tried to follow the encounter with the police live, the authorities at the time said.
Her then 5-year-old son was also shot twice, said Kenneth Ravenell, an attorney for the child, and his father, Corey Cunningham.
A judge overturned the verdict last year. Gaines’ family appealed the decision and a special appellate judge ruled in their favor in July, CNN subsidiary WBAL reported.
