In 1993, a quiet kind of story was written: a connection between the fantastic space travel on television and the real world ̵

1; Live space travel. For the first time, the legendary television program Star Trek featured an astronaut who had actually traveled into space. In Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6, episode 24 "Second Chances" (broadcast date May 24, 1993), real NASA astronaut Mae C. Jemison appeared as a member of Star Fleet: Lt. Palmer.

The performance came about through a friendly relationship with LeVar Burton, who was responsible for his role as a blind, but cyberneticly improved crew member. Commander Geordi La Forge is known. Burton heard from a friend that Jemison loved the show and was interested in sneaking on as an extra. A few phone calls later, combined with the appeal of sneaking a real astronaut onto the ship's list for an episode, and a bit of funny story was written by Star Trek Cameo: Mae C. Jemison was the first African American woman to travel to space ( aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor for the STS-47 mission in September 1992).
