Adidas has been working for years to revolutionize the performance of its shoes for athletes and to get the most out of its materials. Now the new FUTURECRAFT.STRUNG shoe has a data-driven design that resulted in a lightweight and minimal shoe for short distance runners.

The top of the STRUNG is woven by a robot, using threads of different colors and degrees of flexibility to achieve a precise fit. Stronger red thread is used around the heel, metatarsus and toe box to keep the foot from slipping while a softer, more flexible and yellow thread is used on the front. The material-reduced design of the shoe uses an additive manufacturing process that creates almost no waste. This means building the shoe from scratch without adding any excess fabric, seams, glue or other components.
The new manufacturing process from Adidas wraps these individual threads over the midsole to create support and strength without add unnecessary weight. In fact, the STRUNG prototype currently only weighs 220 grams. The shoe has a minimized heel to reduce weight and a rubber outsole specially shaped for runners to easily find a better grip on fast runs.
The Strung is still just a prototype running shoe and is not yet available for purchase. Adidas seems to be considering developing a line of shoes for different types of sports, specifically designed to support your feet exactly the way their sport requires, and maybe we’ll see the first consumer-ready shoes in 2021.
