Every now and then there is a TV movie that̵
Before we get into the series, you should know The librarians starts after three films about the librarian of the same name. But you don’t have to watch them first to enjoy the show. The TV series makes an excellent assumption that you haven’t seen what was before and slowly introduces you to concepts, characters, and mythology.
The job of the librarian is to find magical relics of immeasurable power and to save them for safekeeping in the library. Relics like the Spear of Fate, Pan’s Flute, Da Vinci’s Diary and Blackbeard’s Chest. The library itself is a massive (as big as it needs to be), possibly sentient building, pocket-sized and tied to the physical world of the Metropolitan Public Library.
We begin the series 10 years after Flynn Carsen’s (masterfully played by Noah Wyle) tenure as librarian. That is longer than any librarian before. Once you get used to the movies, you’ll immediately notice that he’s a little older, a little more jaded, and a lot more eccentric.
If you’re a fan of the SyFy Channel, you might call up Foul and scream, “This is a rip off of Department store 13! ”On top of the lungs. But let me stop you there The librarian came first. And the shows are very different despite their common concepts. But if you like Department store 13, Sci-fi, fantasy, and some comedy in general, there’s a good chance you’ll like it The librarians. So don’t write it down yet.
An unbound beginning
At the beginning of the series, The Library sends an invitation to Eve Baird, played by Rebecca Romijn von X-Men Glory to be the new guardian. It is the Guardian’s job to protect the librarian’s physical and mental well-being. Flynn has been without a Guardian since the first film.
Their first day doesn’t go well as they discover a conspiracy to kill anyone who received an invitation 10 years ago to apply for the position of librarian. The only applicants left are three people who didn’t show up.
First up is Jacob Stone (played by Christian Kane), a genius in hiding. He speaks many languages and has degrees in architecture, art history, Native American culture, and more. But he hides behind a pseudonym and works as an oil drill. He didn’t show up for his interview because he feared being a genius would cost him his family.
Right behind him is Cassandra Cillian (played by Lindy Booth). Cassandra is a mathematician with synesthesia. She can use auditory and visual hallucinations to invoke “holographic simulations” to solve problems that normal people cannot. But she didn’t show up for her interview because she has a terminal brain tumor and was in the hospital.
And hidden in the corner is Ezekiel Jones (played by John Harlan Kim). He is an incorrigible master thief who uses an incredible understanding of technology to advance his exploits. In Ezekiel’s mind, he’s the greatest man in the world. He didn’t show up for his interview because he’s an incorrigible master thief.
The cast is rounded off by Jenkins, who is expertly played by John Larroquette. Jenkins is the caretaker of the library, and for much of his tenure he worked in secret. Even Flynn was unaware of his presence until recently. Early episodes imply that Jenkins is much older than he looks.
Just as the group gets together, the library is attacked by an evil group known as the Snake Brotherhood. The group manages to separate the pocket size in which the library is located from the physical level and to block all access to it.
A show of mystery and adventure
If you are a fan of Department store 13You may be wondering what the differences are that I promised. Similar to the SyFy show, each episode focuses on recovering a magical relic and keeping it in the library. However, at the beginning of the series, the library is cut off from the world and Flynn’s best friend, Excalibur (yes, actually the sword of the Arthurian Legend) is killed.
The librarians retreat to an outbuilding and split up into two teams. Flynn leaves (causing Noah Wild to occasionally show up on episodes) to find a way back to the library. Eva, Jacob, Kassandra and Ezekiel take on his task of protecting the world from magic.
Yes, magic is very real which is a differentiator Department store 13but the other is sound. The librarians is a light-hearted, good-natured show that never takes itself too seriously.
It’s ready to sneak away a Tardis Doctor Who or a DeLorean from Back to the Future into an episode about time travel. It is ready to transform its main characters into literal fantasy characters from the picture book like Prince Charming based on the plot. The show has adventure, charm, and dozens of laughs.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be serious, but these moments sneak up on you. It will often happen at the end of an episode to make a lasting point or to teach a wise lesson.
A show from yesterday for today
I am in love The librarians because it reminds me of the TV I saw when I was young. The show even titles episodes like past shows of The librarians and Santa’s midnight run to The librarians and the self-fulfilling prophecy (and now see what I did with this headline title).
You get a little adventure a bit of romance, plot twists, and wise lessons – often from sarcastic Jenkins who also act as the show’s senior mentor. The seasons are linked as the team races to stay one step ahead of the big bad enemy, and the quiet moments you paid attention to will reward you for your patience.
The librarians is a show where the good guys always win the war and the bad guys always lose. Sure, the bad buys look like they win sometimes, and they even get the best of the good ones in a fight, but at the end of the season the good guys win. This is no longer a given in a television series, so there is The librarians show a nostalgic feeling. Best of all, the good guys make their profit and win by doing what is right – not what is easy. Sometimes it’s just nice to see good guys win and bad guys lose.
With each season of the year, characters grow and you understand why every person present, even Ezekiel, is necessary. The library made no mistake about whom it chose to protect the world. Everyone has doubts as to why they belong in the library or if they belong in it. But the group works together to grow, learn, and win as a team.
Canceled too early
Unfortunately, despite all its size, The librarians was canceled after four seasons. That could be a blessing in a way; it did not survive its stay like some shows. (I’m looking at you How I met your mother.) But it didn’t end on its own terms (like The good place), So I want another season. Despite his short tenure, if you enjoy a daring adventure and good versus evil, give him a watch. The librarians is the rare show that has stayed true to its heart from start to finish and is worth watching.
You can see all four seasons from The librarians on Hulu. And if you are interested, you can watch the three original films for free on Vudu with advertisements.
