Microsoft has just released a new build for Windows 1

0 Insider Preview with the Windows Subsystem for Linux 2. WSL 2 includes a true Linux kernel that lets you run more Linux software on Windows and with better performance than WSL 1.

This is part of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18917, released June 12, 2019. It is part of the fast ring of updates. You can experiment with it today even though you need to join the Windows Insider program to get unstable builds of Windows 10 on your PC.

Microsoft's Windows Command Line Blog provides more information about WSL 2, including an installation guide. List of changes to the user experience and other documentation. Run the following command in a PowerShell window that is started with administrator privileges to install WSL 2 on the latest insider build:

  Enable WindowsOptionalFeature online featureName VirtualMachinePlatform

This new version of WSL 2 uses Hyper-V capabilities to build a lean virtual machine with a minimal Linux kernel. However, it is still available on Windows 10 Home, although Hyper-V on Windows 10 Home is not normally available. Expect better compatibility with Linux software, including support for Docker, and a "dramatic increase in file system performance".

The virtual machine starts automatically at startup and takes a bit of memory in the background, but Microsoft promises that it will have a "small performance" storage footprint. "You can run the command wsl --shutdown if you ever want to shut down the background VM.

WSL 2 is part of the development builds for Windows 10 20H1, which is expected to be released by April 2020. WSL may be part of Windows 10 19H2, expected to be released in October 2019, but Microsoft is not yet testing 19H2.

The latest insider version of Windows 10 also includes some other useful features. You can now go to Settings> Update & Security> Delivery Optimization> Advanced Options to throttle Windows Update. For example, you can set Windows Update to use only 1 Mbps or a certain percentage of the available bandwidth when downloading updates in the background.
