With the long-overdue return of the MacBook Air, Apple has achieved a great deal of publicity. With modern processors and a new Retina screen as well as a newly designed Unibody and Touch ID, the interest of the fans of the original is definitely aroused.
But what about the MacBook, the weird interim design that works without an adjective? Introduced in 201
Let's look at it from a purely technical point of view, especially for the entry-level models of MacBook and MacBook Air lines. Here are the specifications for both. Note that the smaller MacBook, although one year older, is still $ 100 more expensive.
How You Can The only real advantage that the smaller MacBook has is a larger basic SSD. This may be offset by the MacBook Air's new Touch ID feature, but those who really want more storage space can upgrade to 256 GB M.2 for a whopping two hundred dollars. Even then, you'll get a bigger, better screen, a much faster processor, better battery life, an extra USB-C / Thunderbolt port and a more comfortable keyboard plus TouchID for a hundred dollars more. It seems as if the Air just above or above the current starting price trumps the smaller MacBook in every respect.
Let's say you have the budget for a better Mac, but you do not want most of the MacBook's larger MacBook Pros or the questionable utility of this Touchbar. Here are a few upgraded MacBooks, both Air and Non-Air, that weigh in at around $ 1800, adding some important specifications.
Also pretty similar on paper. The MacBook gets access to an i7 processor, but it's last year's model and has a slower standard clock and an identical "Turbo Boost Speed" of the new Core i5 of the new MacBook Air. For fifty dollars more you get all the benefits of redesigned MacBook Air designs plus twice the storage space. The smaller MacBook can not be configured with a larger than the 256 GB drive, while the Air can accommodate a 1.5 TB 1.5 TB SSD hard drive when you are ready to add an extra drive numbers.
Who is the MacBook For Now? So where is the 12-inch MacBook? It's smaller than the new MacBook Air because it was smaller than the original 14-inch Air. It's a thinner hair at just 0.51 inches, about an inch narrow and half an inch shorter in depth. Surprisingly, it is about three-quarters of a pound lighter than the MacBook Air, which means that Apple's new "Air" laptop is only the second-brightest in its lineup.
But this is, almost literally, hair-splitting. Both the MacBook and the MacBook Air are so tiny that it makes less sense to make a decision that makes them even smaller. And in the case of the basic model, it is not exactly economical. This is a curious position since the "MacBook" began as the lesser-premium option popular among students and newcomers to Apple's costly ecosystem.
To make it duller, buying a MacBook over a MacBook Air is a bad choice. If you do not necessarily need an extra inch or an extra pound, there is no reason not to opt for the newer design.
What Happens Next
The revival of the Air name, even though it has never technically disappeared, says it out. In an alternate universe, we may have had the same trio of Mac laptops we use now, and the names have been rearranged: the MacBook Pro at the top end with the toughest hardware options, the new MacBook Air called "MacBook." Complementing the original plastic models, and the current MacBook, the Air described as a machine that endangers some finer design points from Apple for ultimate portability.
But we do not do it. The Air was revived in a flashy New York City event, barely mentioning a MacBook that is less than three years old. And the Air retains its original nickname, though it's slightly larger and heavier than the MacBook. What is there?
I think it's reasonable to estimate that the 12-inch MacBook launched in 2015 is not long for this world. At its launch, it was greeted with apprehension, and auditors praised the tiny dimensions and bright screen, but were less satisfied with a single expansion port and uncomfortable keyboard. Many Apple fans either opted for the more expensive Pro models or stuck to their aging MacBook Air for a while longer and longed for the retina upgrade that Apple delivered today.
How the new MacBook Air gets all the fresh hardware MacBook has to deal with the specifications for 2017, and the new machine is cheaper or comparably cheap, while more or less completely replacing the niche that fills the smaller design. It would not surprise me if the 12-inch MacBook disappears from Apple's online and retail stores, with the remainder of its inventory sold out by the end of this year or early 2019.
What then? Apple seems to meet almost all of its requirements with a mid-range air and a high-end Pro. Apple redesigned the MacBook and delivered an Apple laptop valued at less than $ 1,000. And they could use one or at least cashless Apple fans. The older MacBook Air design, with no retina display and with a three-year-old processor, is currently the only Mac laptop under a large laptop. A dollar under, to be exact.
Something tells me, however, that Apple is at the age of $ 1500 iPhones do not have to worry too much about the lower part of the laptop market. If you want an Apple computer for less than the average mortgage payment, you probably want to buy an iPad instead. Then you can do the same "What is a computer?" For every tech journalist that was made yesterday on Twitter.
