Although US drivers nowadays take the turn for red as a matter of course (outside the few areas in which it still exists) ), historically, right-to-red outside sparsely populated areas in western states was not widespread.

All of this changed when the US government, due to the fuel shortage of the 1

970s, was looking for a solution that would increase fuel efficiency and fuel consumption. Studies sponsored by the Federal Highway Authority have shown that when the traffic is clear, the waiting time in clear traffic has been reduced by 9 to 30 percent, allowing for the right turn at red, thus significantly reducing the time drivers spend idling.

By the beginning of 1980, all fifty US states had enacted regulations on turning on the red light, and what was a driving curiosity forty years ago is commonplace today.
