People have done some clever things to make AirPods stay in their ears. They simply twisted them forward and provided them with waterproof tape to use different types of skins, which make the AirPods a little more haptic. But there is a $ 1
I was not an early user of the Apple AirPods. As much as I liked the idea of removing the tangled wires from the earphones in my pocket, the AirPods were a no-go because Apple's uniquely shaped headphones never fit into my ears. They would just fall out. But I was impressed by the way they seamlessly pair with Apple devices and automatically start and stop when you plug them in and out of your ears. I was really baffled that I had to turn to another brand.
Fortunately, my CNET colleague David Carnoy pointed out a solution to his list of the best AirPods accessories.
He told me to try the AhaStyle Silicone Ear Hooks available on Amazon for under $ 15. I made the standard order, which contains two sets of tips – one big and one small – and a silicone bag to keep them in. I realized that the big tips are best for me, even if I'm a small person. After a few months with the AhaStyle earphones, I found that they not only solve the problembut they also stay better in my conventional earbuds. They can handle running and other intense activities, and I find that I do not adjust them so often and push them back into my ears like normal earplugs.
That alone makes them worth the $ 15. However, Carnoy pointed out that the AhaStyle earphones add noise isolation to the AirPods by adding in-ear silicone tips to keep out ambient noise and improve bass performance. I was a bit skeptical, but prolonged use proved him right. The earphones make the sound quality more uniform, more insulating and ultimately a bit clearer.
The only real drawback is that the AhaStyle earhooks must be removed from the AirPods before they can be returned to the charging cradle. They slide effortlessly back and forth, but it's another thing to worry about losing and carrying.
In the intervening months, which offers a similar range of in-ear sealing. But they cost $ 250 and make the $ 15 AhaStyles even more attractive if you already own AirPods.
If you're like me and you do not have the right ears for the AirPods, or you want to use AirPods for running or exercising, or to improve the sound quality of Apple's wireless earphones, it's difficult to do so wrong with these AhaStyle earhooks.
