Even if you find a ZIP file in your daily activities rather than a RAR file, both files can be compressed very well. However, RARs offer many advantages over ZIP files and offer everything from a higher compression level to comprehensive troubleshooting support. But that's not good if you do not know how to open RAR files. Fortunately, the process is a simple process.
Windows users can always buy the premium WinRAR application to open the files – the file archiver that was originally created in conjunction with the proprietary format – but we have some alternative favorites that we consider superior
Windows: 7-Zip
Step 1: Navigate to the 7-Zip download page and select the download link that corresponds to your desired version of the software. If you are using the latest version of Windows 1
In the installer, select the desired destination folder for the utility and click the Install button in the lower right corner of the window. When finished, click the Finish button and start the program
Step 2: Locate the RAR file you want to open on the 7-Zip main interface. Browse the resulting folder directly and double-click the RAR file to access the contents of the file. Alternatively, right-click on the file and select "Open" at the top of the drop-down menu.
Step 3: Double Click on the RAR file to start it in the appropriate program, or if you want to save the file to a different location on your computer , highlight the file in question and click the "Copy" button below the navigation bar. Now that your files are open, 7Zip can help you protect them too.
Other Windows Alternatives
Who does not like alternatives? While 7-Zip remains an excellent tool for opening RAR files, there are other solutions for those who want to streamline the process. RAR Opener, a free download in the Microsoft Store, is the perfect example. The app is a very simple, plugin-like tool with a few big blue buttons for packing and unpacking RAR files. It's also built right into Windows 10 and is a good choice if you need to work with RAR, ZIP, TAR, LZH and other file formats.
MacOS: The Unarchiver
Ziping files to MacOS is an important feature of the operating system, but you need to be able to unpack them as well. An oldie, but a treat, Unarchiver defies the integrated archive unpacker that ships with MacOS – also known as "Archive Utility". The program supports a larger number of file formats and offers additional features similar to those of 7-Zip compared to other offers available on the Internet. Although Unarchiver can not create RAR files, you can still open RARs in a few easy steps.
Step 1: Navigate to the Unarchiver download page and click the "Download" page in the middle or go to the App Store to download the application. Then unpack the file and start the program
Step 2: After opening, make sure that the check box next to "RAR Archive" is checked – along with any other desired archive types Open with the unarchiver – and click on the "Extraction" tab located at the top of the application window. Then select your location for the resulting file from the drop-down menu at the top of the window, Control-click the RAR file you want to open, and select the unarchivizer from the drop-down menu next to " Open with". option.
Step 3: The utility automatically creates and saves a file with the same name as the RAR file in the previous location specified Then just double-click the RAR file, to start them in the corresponding program.
