The PS4 from Sony is known for slow download speeds, especially the original model from 201
Tips for fast acceleration
Follow some basic tips to improve the download speed Each device – not just the PS4. Your internet connection shares the bandwidth on all your devices. Downloading a file to your laptop or streaming Netflix to 4K on another device can slow things down. Pause all other downloads and streams for maximum speed and let your PS4 consume the bandwidth you need.
Stringing multiple downloads to your PS4 has a similar effect. The console must share the bandwidth. So if you want to do a certain download, you should interrupt the other transfers.
Do not play online games while downloading in the background. As you will see below, this will drastically limit your download speed. It is also likely that the download itself will adversely affect your performance, causing delays and connection issues that may penalize you.
Quit all running apps.
One of the fastest ways to increase your download speed is to stop running processes. We've found that download speeds up dramatically. Only a few keystrokes are required:
- With the PS4 running, hold down the PS button on the controller until a menu appears on the screen. Check "Close Application (s)" and tap X.
This tip has its roots in Juho Snellman's 2017 blog post. The system programmer found that the receive window the console becomes considerably smaller with every game or every other application running.
Sony has probably developed this behavior to prioritize games and other software. Because of this, you can download items from PSN and continue to play online games. If you're in a hurry until the download is complete, stop running games or apps and do something else for a while.
Suspend and resume the download
Another tip we've seen pauses for your download and then resumes it. If you feel that your PS4 is getting tired of a major update or game download, this tip may help.
You must access the download queue under Notifications:
- Access the PS4 Dashboard by pressing the PS button press once.
- Tap the left joystick (or D-pad) to highlight Notifications, and then tap X. 19659011] You should see "Downloads" in the list, highlight it, and tap X. .
- Highlight the currently downloaded item and tap X, then select Pause.
- Tap X again in the highlighted download and select Continue. "
It will take a few moments for the download to start again. Hopefully, this time around, the download should be faster and with a shorter estimated download time. You can try this several times, especially if you notice the loss of speed again.
Put your PS4 to sleep.
If you have time and are not using your PS4 at this time, hibernation can improve performance a bit. For best results, close all applications before enabling sleep mode (see description at the beginning of this article).
Before hibernating your PS4, you must enable Internet background access to continue the download while your computer is in Standby mode located. Enter the PS4 Settings menu, scroll down to Energy Saver Settings and tap X. Select Set Sleep Available Features and make sure you enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
Now you can put your PS4 to sleep by holding down the PS button on your controller, scroll down to Power, and press Enter Rest Mode "select. You will need to turn your PS4 back on to see the progress of your download.
Using a wired connection
Wireless networks can be slow and prone to failure. Even if you have a modern router, you can not control the weather or the radio channel of your neighbor. For a much more stable network connection, avoid using Wi-Fi and instead use an Ethernet cable.
The original PS4 is notoriously bad for its Wi-Fi connection, but a wired connection improves performance in both the Slim and Pro hardware revisions. If your router is near your console, this is a simple solution. On the back of all PS4 models is an Ethernet port. Connect one end of a standard Ethernet cable to your console and the other end to a free port on your router.
What if PS4 and router differ? Room or on different floors? With Ethernet Powerline adapters, you can use the cables that are already in your walls. In the past, we explained how to set up a power grid in your own home. Read Geek's Powerline Network Adapter Recommendations for ideas for shopping.
For many of us, wireless networks are the only option. The original PS4 model only supports 802.11b / g / n (2.4 GHz), while the newer PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro models support dual-band 802.11ac in the 5 GHz band. While 2.4GHz Wi-Fi has better wall penetration than dual-band 5GHz Wi-Fi, the old standard is slower and more susceptible to interference.
If you still want to use a Wi-Fi connection, you should use 5 GHz Wi-Fi if possible. Ideally, the router and console should be in the same room or as close as possible. Do not forget to do a Wi-Fi scan to find the best channels to avoid interference. Follow these tips to get a better radio signal.

Set up a proxy server
Many users swear that setting up a proxy server on a local computer solved their download problems. A proxy is like a gateway to the Internet that is most commonly used in a corporate network. A Reddit user explains how this can improve your download speed:
By getting a computer on your local network to lift some of the load, you may be able to increase the download speed. This is especially true for early PlayStation 4 models with notoriously unreliable network adapters.
First, you need to download and run a proxy server on your local machine. Windows users can use a free version of CCProxy, while Mac users can use the free App Squidman. Download the proxy server and install it on a computer that is connected to the same network as your PS4.
Configuring CCProxy for Windows
To configure your PS4 to use your proxy, you need two pieces of information: the proxy address and the port number. Under CCProxy, this is very simple: Click on "Options" then under "Local IP address" on "IP" and under "HTTP / RTSP" on "Port".
Configure Squidman for Mac
Hold down the Option key and click Click the Network icon in the top right of the screen. Make a note of the "IP address" of your local computer. Now start Squidman and go to Squidman> Settings at the top of the screen. Note the "HTTP Port" under General. Now click on the tab "Clients".
You must add a range of IP addresses that your new proxy can use. If your IP address looks like "192.168.0.X" in the previous step, you can click New and enter "192.168.0.0/24" to enable it for the entire range. If your IP address is "10.0.0.X", you can enter "10.0.0.0/16" to enable the entire range.
Click "Save" and then "Stop Squid" to stop the server Click "Start Squid" to restart the server You can now configure your PS4.
- Go to your console's Settings menu and scroll down to Network, then tap X.
- Check "Set up Internet Connection" and tap then click X.
- Choose between "Use Wi-Fi" or "Use LAN cable," based on your current configuration.
- Choose Custom, and then tap X.
- Select A Wi-Fi network and enter the required password.
- For IP Address Settings, select Automatic and tap X.
- For DHCP host name, select "Do not specify" and tap X.
- For "DNS Settings", select "Automatic" and tap X.
- For "MTU Settings", select "Automatic" and tap X.
- For "Proxy Server", select "Use" and tap X.
- Enter the IP Mark "Next" and tap "X".
- Finally, select "Test Internet Connection" and tap "X". Then wait for the test to finish.
Remember that your PS4 must use this proxy to access the Internet. If the IP address of your proxy server changes, your PS4 can not connect to the Internet. For the regular operation of your PS4 (playing online games, streaming movies, surfing the PlayStation Store) you do not really need the proxy server.
If you do not want your PS4 to be constantly dependent on a proxy. You can undo these changes. This means that you will need to re-establish the PS4 Internet connection and select "Do not use" when prompted to enter a proxy server (the Simple Network Setup option also works).
Your mileage may vary: Change your DNS server
] DNS stands for Domain Name System and is a bit of an address book for the Web. The DNS servers you use determine which servers will be resolved when you enter a web address. If you have not changed the DNS servers, use the default settings of your service provider.
Some users swear that changing DNS servers has resolved their download speed issues for PS4. Others consider it a placebo effect. Some have theories that your choice of DNS servers affects the servers your console uses for downloads. We do not know exactly how it works. In both cases, we recommend using Cloudflare or Google's DNS servers, which are likely to be faster than those provided by your ISP.
The best way to do this is to change the DNS servers on your router, which affects all devices in your network. If you choose this route, you do not have to enter manual DNS server changes on each device. Learn more about changing the DNS servers of your router.
If you'd like to try this out, you can use alternative DNS servers from Google (126.96.36.199 and 188.8.131.52), CloudFlare (184.108.40.206). , or choose the fastest DNS servers based on your location.
If you do not want to change the DNS server for your entire home network, you can only change it on your PS4. You do not need to do this if you have already changed it on your router!
To change which DNS server your PS4 uses:
- Access your console's Preferences menu, then scroll down to Network Tap X.
- Check " Set up Internet connection ", then tap X.
- Depending on the current setup, choose between" Use Wi-Fi "and" Use LAN cable. "
- When asked how you want to Set up your connection, choose Custom, and tap X.
- Select a Wi-Fi network and enter the required password.
- For IP Address Settings, select Automatic and tap X.
- For DHCP Hostname, select "Do not specify" and tap X.
- Select for " DNS Settings ", select" Manual "and tap X.
- Add two DNS servers of your choice under" Primary DNS "and in the" Secondary DNS "fields, select" Next "and tap to X.
- For "MTU Settings", select "Automatic" and tap X.
- Select "Do not use" for "Proxy Server" and tap X.
- Select Finally, "Test Internet Connection" and tap X. Then wait for the test to complete.
Could the problem be your internet speed?
When was the last time you tested your internet speed? If your Internet speed is slow at first, nothing you do with your PS4 will improve things. Test your connection to a laptop or desktop computer by going to Speedtest.net or downloading the Speedtest apps for iOS and Android.
If your speed does not meet the requirements, you should look into your service provider. It's also worth testing several times at different times of the day to better diagnose the problem.
