To turn the Caps Lock on your Mac into an additional modifier key

If you do not tend to scream on the Internet, you probably do not use the Caps Lock key. That's weird, because it's right next to a bunch of useful modifier keys. So make the Caps Lock button as handy as the others.

What can you do with an additional accessory key?

Maybe it's best to tie custom hotkeys. If you're using an app like BetterTouchTool, you can use an extra modifier key to add a blank list of hotkeys to which you can attach actions. If you want to trigger a shell script or open a new e-mail tab when you press Caps + B, you can do so.

You can also run the same custom hotkeys without Caps Lock, but you must use comical combinations such as Shift + Ctrl + Command to not affect the default shortcuts. With this method, any app that lets you set your own keyboard shortcuts will support the new Caps Lock modifier.

You can also recapture existing keyboard shortcuts to use Caps Lock. If there is too complicated a linkage that bothers you, you can rebind it in macOS 'keyboard settings to make it easier to press. For example, the shortcut in macOS to take a screenshot of a selection is Shift + Command + 5, but you can bind it to Caps + S.

Now there is no way to add an additional modifier key. For compatibility reasons, you can make better use of this feature for compatibility reasons by re-assigning the Caps Lock key as if you were simultaneously pressing the Shift, Control, Option, and Command keys. Since this is such an absurd combination, you do not have to press any app for each hotkey, and there should be no disruption.

This means that you can use combinations like Caps Lock + Lose Command, but it should work just fine enough with any other alphanumeric key. You can assign the Caps Lock key to an additional feature key, such as F1

3-20, but it may not work as a hotkey in any app. You can also re-assign the Caps Lock key to Escape (or any other modifier key). This will not add any additional features. it just puts the key.

 macOS Carabiner Elements

Normally you need to use carabiner to edit the JSON for your new version and add it manually. But one of the examples is exactly what we're trying to do, so you do not have to make any extra adjustments. Just click "+ Activate" next to "Caps_lock in Command + Ctrl + Option + Shift" to add the rule to Carbine.

You should make sure the Caps Lock key is off before adding the rule, or you & # 39; I'll scream forever. You can turn it off at any time to toggle the Caps Lock key, but this particular rule does not provide a way to use the key in any other way.

If you need to correct this, click "Import more rules from the Internet" and download the "Change caps_lock" kit from the official site.

 Caps Lock Enhancement

You can import it in the same way as you would import another rule into carbine, or visit the installation URL in your browser and open it in Carabiner.
