Chromecast from Google lets you easily watch movies from different devices on your big screen TV. However, saving video files on multiple devices is a good solution. You can use Google Drive as a personal online movie library. However, since Google Drive does not support casting directly from the app, you'll need another method of casting the file.
Here are some step-by-step instructions to help you view Google Drive movies on your Chromecast.
Google Photos Casting
If you're using Google Drive, chances are you're using Google Photos as well. Fortunately, this app supports the transfer of images and videos, and is therefore a good way to bypass Google Drive movies.
There are two ways to view your Drive files in Google Photos. In the first method, simply navigate to the desired file in Drive. Click the three-dot more options icon and choose Open With. Wait for the file to download and click "Open with photos". The video plays and can be transferred to your Chromecast via the familiar Cast button.
Alternatively, you can upload your Google Drive movies and images directly to Google Photos. That way, they will appear in your photo app along with your other pictures to facilitate casting. As of July 10, 2019, will no longer be able to automatically sync between the two apps, so you'll need to manually upload files. Go to photos.google.com and click the upload button in the top right corner. Select the new Google Drive options and upload your movies.
Casting of Google Drive movies with a special app
The method described above is occasionally cast, but not really suitable if you have a large library of Google Drive movies that you can watch on your big screen TV. Instead, a dedicated casting app is a better option, and there are a few that support the casting of Google Drive and other sources.
Some popular options are the apps AllCast, AllConnect, LocalCast for Chromecast and Sever Cast. All of these apps are supported by ads. Many offer pro features if you want to disable ads.
UIs and features vary from app to app, but you need to give the app access to your Google Drive account to view your files. Try displaying files from Google Drive with the app. You will be prompted to select the correct Google Account from a list and then confirm the required permissions. You can revoke these permissions at any time at a later time if you uninstall the app.
Once done, simply navigate to your desired video, connect, and send it to your device of choice. Easy.
