Trump shared the picture when he and Biden had a fierce battle over senior voters, a demographic that Trump wore in 2016 but who has deviated from the president, according to recent polls. Trying to capitalize on this trend, 77-year-old Biden traveled to a senior citizen center in Florida on Tuesday to argue that 74-year-old Trump neglected elderly Americans.
“You are expendable. You are unforgettable. You are practically nobody. That’s how he sees seniors, ”Biden told the crowd. “The only senior Donald Trump cares about ̵
Trump was the oldest president ever elected in 2016 when voters 65 and over firmly supported him over Hillary Clinton, according to polls. Biden would beat Trump’s record if he wins next month and he is betting on the same senior voters to get him to the White House.
A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll found the two candidates – the oldest ever nominated by their parties – are tied with voters 65 and over, Biden at 49 percent and Trump at 48 percent. The race in the important swing state of Florida, which has one of the largest older electoral blocs in the country, appears similarly close.
Since Trump has been ill-treated for dealing with the novel coronavirus pandemic that kills older Americans more than any other population group, he has sought to cement his support among seniors. He also spoke to seniors in Sanford, Florida on Monday and debuted a new ad on Tuesday arguing that Biden was jeopardizing older voters’ access to health care.
In the video he shared on Twitter last week, Trump positioned himself as a senior and promised to give Americans quick access to the drugs he claims helped him get off quickly earlier this month to recover from the coronavirus.
But that news is in stark contrast to his Twitter attack on Biden on Tuesday night. Under the manipulated photo of Biden in a wheelchair, the first letter in “President” is crossed out to create the message “Biden for Residents” – presumably from an assisted living facility.
He also has a history of ridiculing people with disabilities, including an infamous attempt at a rally to mimick a New York Times journalist with arthrogryposis that affects the mobility of his joints.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the tweet.
