Two were killed when a small plane crashed into a parking lot near Van Nuys Airport

At least two people died Friday afternoon when a small fixed-wing aircraft crashed in a parking lot on the 7000 block on North Hayvenhurst Avenue west of Van Nuys Airport, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Department spokesman Capt. Erik Scott said he had arrived on site to see the white, single-engine aircraft that was still on fire, with burned, twisted pieces of metal forming a heap of debris and other broken pieces in the Proximity.

Firefighters pulled hose lines and put out the burning debris, Scott said. Two people found in the rubble were pronounced dead. You weren̵

7;t immediately identified. There was no damage to nearby structures, but three vehicles were slightly damaged.

Witnesses said they saw the plane fly straight into the parking lot and missed buildings nearby, Scott said.

“It’s lucky this was not a populated area,” he said.

Scott said the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash and remove the debris from the scene.
