On Tuesday, Unity released the latest version of its 3D engine, which brings improvements to the scriptable render pipeline that the company introduced earlier this year.
In Unity 2018.1, the Scriptable Render Pipeline (SRP) allows developers to optimize the performance of their apps based on hardware profiles. Unity's Lightweight Render Pipeline (LWRP) is designed to deliver high-quality immersive content on smartphones and tablets, while the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) enables developers to use high-performance gaming consoles and PCs.
"One of the goals of Unity 2018.2 was to build on SRPs (Scriptable Render Pipeline) Rendering the next level rendering. "Wrote Thomas Krogh-Jacobsen, senior product marketing manager at Unity, in a blog post. "Another area of focus has been the development of a number of features and enhancements that help you with mobile deployment."
In Unity 2018.2, SRP is still a preview feature, so Unity warns against using the features for production applications. It gets some extra skills, mainly in the HD pipeline. The HDRP gets support for Shader Graph, Unity's new tool (also in Preview), which allows developers to create shaders graphically instead of encoding. The HDRP also enhances volumetry, glossy planar reflection, mesh decals, shadow masks and other attributes.
The release brings a variety of quality of life enhancements to developers. Particularly noteworthy for the development of augmented reality mobile apps is the addition of a plugin for Google Play instant packages. As with Google I / O, Google Play Instant is gaining support for ARCore, with Tapcart as a guinea pig on Android.
As the market for development tools continues to grow alongside the demand for immersive experiences, Unity is still highly competitive. According to a company spokesperson, content, apps and games created with Unity have generated more than $ 12.4 billion over the past 18 months.
With companies like Adobe and its Project Aero Toolkit, Unity has become a challenge. Continuous improvement will be critical to the company to maintain its market share.
Unity 2018.2 can now be downloaded from the Unity website or Unity Hub.
