A common feature of televisions is that all sleep timers are pretty much the same. Start playing some media, set a timer, and watch or listen until you fall asleep. When the set time has elapsed, playback stops and, in some cases, the power is turned off.
If you want to play music, watch videos, or hear white noise while sleeping on your iPhone or iPad, you've probably met a sleep timer app (or three) on your iOS device. IOS has a sleep timer built in since iOS 7, but it's not easy to find out if you know where to look.
How to use it.
How to Use the Sleep Timer in iOS
The reason why so many people overlook the native sleep timer is that it is almost never mentioned. And technically, it's not called a sleep timer. It is buried in the Clock app under ̵
It makes perfect sense to drop it there. After all, it's just a timer. But instead of playing a sound after the timer expires, everything that is playing is stopped. Not only does it allow you to delete an unneeded app from your phone, but unlike third-party sleep timers, the clock app does not need to remain open for the sleep timer to actually do its job.
To set a Sleep Timer on iOS:
- Open the App Clock . (You can start Clock quickly from anywhere by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and tapping the clock icon.)
- Tap Timer in the lower right corner to switch to the correct tab. Set the desired timer length in hours and minutes.
- Tap When the timer ends .
- Scroll all the way down and select Stop Playing . In the top right corner, tap and then . Click Start to start the timer.
Whether you stream a movie, YouTube videos, or music in Spotify When you listen to a podcast, the timer's stopwatch stops all media that is playing. It also locks your device so the screen does not stay on when you watch a video. This helps to save the battery when the device is not charging.
If you stop playing media, you prefer doing so. The end of the timer is saved. So if you want to quickly set a sleep timer in the future, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, tap the clock icon with your mouse and select one of the preset times.
This also means that if you ever want an audible timer in the future, you'll need to go back to the clock app and select a ringtone.
