The invitation reads: "Dress code: casual." So you should, what ̵

1; wear clothes?

Although Dressing Casual is easy in theory (most of us do it every day). Decipher what "casual" means when the dress code is slightly different. "Casual" does not necessarily mean "Wear whatever you want."

It's harder to make a mistake with a casual dress code than most, but there are still some guidelines that can help you get it right. Learn how to navigate with this deceptively simple dress code style in this section of our dress code tutorials.

Casual: A Definition

Casual basically means "whatever you want – as long as it's an event". Like business casual, casual clothing is determined in part by the nature of the event. However, casual clothing offers much more options than business casual clothing.

You can wear everything that looks good. These include jeans, pullovers, T-shirts, sneakers and more. In general, however, flip-flops, sweats or sports clothing are not included. They reveal clothing, spotty clothing, highly distressed or torn items, and graphic shirts with insulting or controversial statements.

Your goal is to wear your normal clothing, but with just a little more attention to the presentation.

To make things even more confusing, some workplaces have a "casual" dress code. (Or take part in the somewhat odd "casual Friday tradition.") With a casual dress code at work, you have the opportunity to express a lot of personality with your clothes. Just avoid things that make you look lazy (like sweats) or make someone uncomfortable (like certain political slogans).

If you're not sure, opt for business casual at work instead.

When To Casual Casual

If the dress code style is not specified for an event you should think twice about making the right choice or not.

Some examples of wearing casual wear:

  • Picnics
  • Parties
  • Restaurants
  • Airplanes

You should wear casual wear in places where you expect no harm. But where would you like to make a good impression on the people around you?

Of course it is not wrong to wear sweat in a relaxed restaurant or on a plane. However, if it is a specific event, e.g. For example, having a friend's birthday meal or flying the wedding party to a destination wedding, you can honor this occasion with carefully chosen casual wear.

There are a few exceptions to this list: For example, casual wear will not fly when the restaurant is well-fed, and business casual suits a workgroup better. Real casual wear is best for events involving friends and family – not colleagues – unless it's a casual work space
