Although the Hindenburg Tragedy was the most publicized and remembered airship disaster in aviation history, the Hindenburg was the best known of the Disaster was not the first or the deadliest airship disaster. The 20th century can rely on over 60 airship disasters, including the deadliest.

On the evening of April 3, 1

933, the USS Akron crashed to calibrate a mission from the New England coast to radio directional transmitters. The Akron got into bad weather and ended up in a bag with lower air pressure than at launch, resulting in a lower altitude. While at lower altitude the airship was caught by an updraft, almost immediately followed by a suction flight.

Despite skilful maneuvering by the crew, the severe weather and stress of the Akron proved too much and the ship broke apart across the Atlantic. The ship, which had shared the record for the largest helium-filled airship with its sister ship, the USS Macon was never salvaged and 73 out of 76 of the crew members died on board.
