What was the first arcade game that scored high scores?
Which of our solar system neighbors would fit in Russia?
Answer: Space Invaders
Although Space Invaders was quite simple in modern times, it was the first groundbreaking game in 1978 Opponents who have shot back at the player, the first game in which the players have gained several lives, and the first game with a continuous background soundtrack. While all of this is remarkable and certainly influences future games, the real innovation that players came back to again and again was the highscore table.
Space Invaders was the first video game to record highscores between games, allowing players to perpetuate their high scores by signing. As such, players were given a reason to return to the game, check scoreboards, and try to regain (or further consolidate) their status as a highscorer. Persistent high scores combined with a leaderboard proved extremely popular and the practice has continued over time in both the arcade and home video games.
