It would be easy to assume that Oktoberfest is a party for a party is only half the story. The original Oktoberfest (long before it had such a name) was actually a huge wedding reception hosted by the German royal family for the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen in October celebrate 12, 1810. The reception took place in huge tents that were set up in fields outside the city of Munich and lasted for days – some of the festivities were recorded in the engraving shown here.
The event was so funny and so well received By the people of Munich who organized an even bigger party next year. Once you have established a tradition that includes good food and beer, horse racing and a welcome break from work, it usually remains. Since then, Germans (and many lucky tourists) have enjoyed the continuation of a 19th century rocking wedding reception.
