Hall & Oates, a musical duo from Daryl Hall & John Oates, came to life in the late 1
960s as a result of a ballroom brawl. In 1967, both men were in the Adelphi Ballroom in Philadelphia and competed their own music groups in a competition in the style of the "Battle of the Band". But the music was not the only thing that people were arguing about. Rival gang members in the crowd began to fight, weapons were pulled, and when the shots were fired, Hall and Oates found themselves together, both escaping the chaos in a service elevator backstage.
The two stage refugees realized they had something in common (like both who attended Temple University in Philadelphia) and even became roommates. When in 1970 they decided to start a musical act together, they lifted their band name directly from the mailbox of their apartment: "Hall & Oates".
