Which Star Trek actor is responsible for the invention of the Klingon language?

James Doohan on the set of Star Trek
Paramount Pictures

Answer: James Doohan

Not just James Doohan, known for his role as Montgomery Scotty, a sly fellow in his role as chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise but he was also a thoroughly smart gentleman. In the early years of the Star Trek universe, those of the Klingon people were portrayed as speaking English without a native language being discernible.

That changed with the shooting of Star Trek : The Movie . Doohan, not only a talented television actor, but also an accomplished speaker, created dialogues for the Klingons in the hard and guttural-sounding language fans who are now recognized by fans as Klingon. Doohan's efforts, however, were only the beginning of the fictional language.

When the third Star Trek film came out in 1

984, the director, none other than Leonard Nimoy, wanted the Klingons to speak a reproducible language with its own syntax and constructions. Marc Okrand, the person who had originally studied and transcribed Doohan's original Klingon creations, further broadened Doohan's work and laid the foundation for what would become an obscure but legitimate language.
