Which US cities will receive 5G in 2019?

5G will revolutionize the way we use the Internet, bring high-speed data anywhere, create smart cities, and even connect to the Internet for the internet. That's what the industry says anyway. But when does 5G come to your city?

What is 5G?

Verizon, AT & T and T-Mobile are trying to bring 5G to your phone and into your home. But what is 5G and how is it different from 4G LTE?

5G is the wireless standard that will replace 4G LTE. It can theoretically reach speeds of up to 1

00 gigabits per second, which is very fast. To put it in perspective: That's twice as fast as a 4G LTE connection, much faster than a wired connection at ten megabits per second and comparable to the speed people get with wired fiber links.

And although it's a wireless connection, 5G has a much lower latency than the cable connection you have at home. According to the FCC, fiber links tend to have a delay of 17 milliseconds, and cable internet links have a latency of about 28 milliseconds. However AT & T claims that their 5G connections have a delay between 9 and 12 milliseconds. This reduced delay time makes streaming, downloading, playing, and video chatting much more reliable.

Service providers have tested 5G in the real world to see how it works. They also run for their money. Therefore, there are already some cities that have 5G connections. If you happen to live in one of these cities, keep in mind that you can not really use 5G mobile connections without a compatible phone. Therefore, you must wait a few months before the 5G products access the Internet

These US cities currently have 5G (as of January 17, 2019):

Verizon (Internal Internet Service):

  • Go Angeles, California
  • Sacramento, California
  • Indianapolis, IN [19659017] Houston, TX

AT & T:

  • Jacksonville, FL
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Louisville , KY
  • New Orleans, LA
  • Charlotte, NC
  • Raleigh, NC
  • Oklahoma City, OK
  • Dallas, TX
  • Houston, TX
  • San Antonio, TX
  • Waco, TX

T-Mobile:

  • Los Angeles, CA [19659017] Las Vegas, NV
  • New York, NY
  • Dallas, TX
  • Claimed that they would not 5G in 2018 in 26 others would bring closer designated cities.

Sprint:

  • Sprint: Merge with T-Mobile. They helped T-Mobile build their 5G network.

Nationwide coverage will not occur in 2019, but all major US mobile operators have announced plans to roll out 5G to more cities this year.

These cities will eventually receive 5G in 2019. According to the mobile operators:

AT & T:

  • San Jose, California
  • San Francisco, California
  • San Diego, California
  • Orlando, FL
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Nashville, USA TN
  • San Antonio, TX
  • Plans for nationwide coverage by 2020.

Verizon: (These are not officially confirmed, but Verizon carried out test 5G networks in the following cities and already launched 5G networks. Services in Other Cities Cities where test networks were operated are our best guess.)

  • Denver, CO
  • Washington DC
  • Miami, FL
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Brockton, MA [19659016] Ann Arbor, M
  • Bernardsville, NJ
  • Dallas, TX
  • Seattle, WA

T-Mobile:

  • Planned to provide coverage for 2/3 of America by 2021, but it is not determine in which cities 2019 T-Mobile 5G will be available. As they will merge with Sprint, they will likely win all 5G networks that Sprint will build in 2019.

Sprint:

  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Washington DC
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Kansas City, MI
  • New York, NY

There is a good chance you will not live in one of these cities, even if you live in the United States. For this reason, we do not recommend buying a 5G phone in 2019. If you live in a 5G city and are excited about new technologies, you may want to ignore our advice and still be a novice anyway. However, expect some problems with these first-generation mobile phones – and do not expect Apple's next iPhone to support 5G.

Wireless companies will install transmitters in a whole city, with a distance of about 150-250 meters between each transmitter. These dense networks ensure that phones and homes have a fast, low-latency Internet connection. These networks will also be suitable for mobile hotspots, and AT & T already offers 5G mobile hotspots for businesses and consumers.

You can not buy a 5G phone yet, but service providers are struggling to get them on the shelves. The first 5G phone will be Samsung, which will release a 5G phone with Verizon and AT & T in the next few months. T-Mobile and Sprint (who are planning a merger) have already worked with Nokia, but have not set a release date for a 5G-enabled mobile phone.

The only service provider currently offering home 5G is Verizon. But you have to live in the right city. AT & T does not yet offer home 5G services (although you could use their mobile hotspot service at home), but they are likely to offer home 5G applications to their existing home Internet customers.
