963 Valentina Tereshkova was the pilot and only crew of the Russian spacecraft Vostok 6 As a result of this spaceflight, Tereshkova has received two awards for space research. Their journey into Earth orbit was the first time that a woman and a civilian had flown into space.

Although she had experience as a pilot and parachutist, unlike her earlier astronauts and cosmonauts, she was not a member of the military. So that she could fly in the Cosmonaut Corps, she was voluntarily admitted to the Soviet Air Force. Her space flight was a success, and during her three-day orbital stay in space, she spent more time than any American astronaut who had flown before that date. Tereshkova's tests and observations helped lay the foundation for future female space explorers.
