When I switched from Android to an iPhone for the first time ($ 1,000 on Amazon) I slept through all my alarm clocks for a week. The reason? I was not sure. My alarms were set, but they just did not wake me up. It was only when I woke up (by accident) during an alarm that I found that the alarm volume of my iPhone was ridiculously low.
Here's the reason: iOS has two different volume controls – ringer volume, which controls the volume, ringtone, notifications and system alerts, as well as alarms; and media volume, which controls the in-app volume for games, music, and videos in addition to calls. Because your alarm volume is tied to your ringer volume, you can accidentally mute your alarm by changing it before you fall asleep. Here are some steps to make sure your alarm is loud enough to wake you up:
Increase the Volume
To set the ringer volume, not the media volume, access the Home screen. When you're on the home screen, use the volume keys to adjust the ringer volume. You know that you are adjusting the ringer volume because the volume indicator on your screen is labeled "Ringer".
If the volume indicator on your screen is labeled "Volume," not "Ringer," you may have your phone set up to only adjust media volume using the volume keys. To fix this, go to Settings and then to Sounds & Haptics. See Ringing and Warnings to see a toggle switch labeled Change with buttons . Turn on this switch to adjust the volume of your phone's ringer volume using the volume keys.
Use the silent switch on your phone.
If you're tired of your alarm clock, it may be because you're reducing your phone's ring volume before you go to bed. Instead of using the volume keys to mute your phone all day, you can simply turn off your phone's ringtone using the volume key (via the volume keys). This will turn off your phone's ringtone, but the alarm will remain.
Check your alarm
Use the alarm settings screen to check how loud your alarm will sound. To do this, open the app Clock and go to Alarm . At the top left, tap Edit and select the alarm you want to check. Touch tone and then the desired alarm tone.
The alarm plays with the current ringer volume. This is the volume of your alarm unless you change the volume later. To make it louder or softer, simply use the buttons to adjust the volume while the test alarm is playing.
