Why your oven smokes (and how to fix it)

A smoker not only smells bad, it can also taste bad. In most cases, however, a smoke oven does not mean you have to call the mechanic. Here are some reasons why your stove may smoke and how you can fix it.

It is new

New stoves tend to smoke or have an unusual smell when you first use them. Smoking may come from packaging material such as plastic, tape or styrofoam that was left unpacking the oven. Let it cool down first and then go to search to remove any leftovers.

If you're sure you've removed all the packaging material, you'll probably only need to "burn in" your new appliance. Basically, this smell and possible smoke is from adhesives that harden in the unit. Not a big deal, really, but it can give a nasty, oily smell. Here's how to burn in your oven to get rid of the smell .

It needs to be cleaned

The most common cause of smoke is scraps of food burning on the heating element or on the bottom of the stove. A good cleaning is ok, which starts with the self-cleaning mode of your oven. In a story about removing bad smells from your oven we mentioned that the self-cleaning mode should be used with a lot of discretion. Follow these instructions to clean your oven .

After the self-cleaning mode is complete, allow the oven to cool and then wipe off any remains of charred foods that have remained behind. These small pieces can still smoke if left in the oven.

If your oven does not have a self-cleaning mode, you can use this natural cleaning method:

And be sure to clean the inside of the oven window. Food can get stuck there and the self-cleaning mode will not normally clean this area. This is how the interior of the oven window becomes clean .

Cleaning causes smoke

If you do not clean with vinegar or use a self-cleaning mode, the cleaning method may be the problem. Oven cleaners purchased in the store tend to smoke if you do not remove any residue from the oven after cleaning. Wipe the interior with a damp cloth when the stove has cooled. This will prevent smoke from being used again.

It is the heating element

Smoke and hum in an electric oven are usually a sign that the heating element of the stove is going out. In this case, call a technician to install a replacement. This is one of the few times in which you can not have a smoke problem.

If your stove has gas, there may be too much gas pressure in the heating element. This can also cause smoke. Check if the flame reaches the oven shelves. If so, call your gas company to see if the gas pressure of your home needs to be adjusted.
