which urgently needed a catchy name. In 1999, the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA) commissioned the brand consulting firm Interbrand to develop a catchy name for the soon-to-be-present communication protocol.

Of all the suggested names, WECA chose Wi-Fi, a Play the high-quality sound of sophisticated stereo components and speakers with the stereo term HiFi – High Fidelity. High fidelity home equipment, as seen here in Motorola advertising, was common in the mid-to-late 20th century. Other names that were almost taken over by Interbrand included Hornet, Trapeze, Skybridge and Dragonfly.

At first, no attempt was made to explain the meaning of Wi-Fi. In response to consumers' curiosity, the Wi-Fi Alliance (formerly WECA) added a slogan to their ad with the words "The Standard for Wireless Fidelity". The slogan was removed shortly after its launch and all references to Wi-Fi having anything to do with words or otherwise disappeared with high-fidelity sound. The current attitude of the Wi-Fi Alliance is that Wi-Fi has no definition and is just a name.
