There is a time and place for thorough and sustained reading. But sometimes you just want to know what a term means in the news. And you want to know it now. If you are curious but have little time, the simple English Wikipedia is the answer.

The premise behind simple Wikipedia is simple! Let's say you want to learn more about "blockchains" because you keep hearing about them in the news. If you take a look at the Wikipedia entry for "Blockchain", it is quite technical and quite long with around 3,800 words. And maybe it's worth reading if you are really curious about the blockchain technology. However, if you are just trying to get a brief summary of a term that you have read in the paper, this is the simple English Wikipedia.

This is a Wikipedia version that offers articles formatted in two useful ways. First, a simplified language is used (authors do their best to avoid overly technical or complex vocabulary). Secondly, the entries are almost always shorter. The simplified version of the entry for "Blockchain" contains only about 400 words and provides a very brief (though not exhaustive) summary of the topic. Not every article on the Wikipedia main website has a simple English counterpart, but over 1


To access simple English Wikipedia articles, you can start on the main page and use the search box just as you would on the main Wikipedia site. If you have followed a link to the main Wikipedia site from another location and you prefer a summary, you can change the URL. Just change the subdomain in the URL from "en.wikipedia" to "simple.wikipedia" to redirect it as follows:
