Xbox Boss Announces Staff That Game Pass Streaming Is Coming To iOS Via Web App – Review Geek

Android players who also subscribe to Xbox Game Pass have been enjoying streaming games on their phones for several weeks. Due to a very specific App Store policy, Game Pass and similar services like Stadia are currently not allowed on the iPhone and iPad. Microsoft could get around this policy with a web app next year.

Phil Spencer, Microsoft̵

7;s head of Xbox, said this on a conference call to company employees. Business Insider reports that Spencer has told his team that they will be working on a “direct browser-based solution” for Game Pass streaming (nee xCloud). This would bypass Apple’s instruction that every game in the Apple App Store must be reviewed and approved by Apple itself, including games hosted on streaming services.

Amazon has come to the same conclusion: the retailer announces that its upcoming cloud gaming service Luna, with support for iPhone and iPad, will be launched via an app that runs entirely in the web browser. Some third-party developers have also worked on this. “Stadium” is a browser app that was specially developed (but not expressly) to run the Chrome web version of Google Stadia on iOS. It is still available as a free download at the time of writing.

Apple’s streaming game guidelines are clearly at odds with the direction the gaming industry is headed. It must be argued that it is tailored to give the Apple Arcade service a competitive advantage. This is an argument Apple could forego as it is being tried by Epic over App Store policies and increasing scrutiny of monopoly behavior in the US and Europe.
