Your desk job leads to devastation in your body. Here's how to fix it

Since 1960, the percentage of physical activity at work has decreased by about 30 percent, mainly due to the increase in office workplaces that require sedentary work.

We know that sitting is associated with health complications such as weight gain and increased risk of heart disease. One study even claims that people who show sedentary behavior die earlier.

If you work in an office, you have a chance to spend more time there than at home if you do not count . If you do not optimize the place where you spend more than 40 hours per week, you can not expect healthy habits to affect the rest of your life.

And if you work from home, creating a workspace that promotes healthy work habits is even more important, as a workspace at home presents a number of challenges (if your couch calls your name just a few meters away)) ,

Here are five ways to stay healthy and comfortable at work.

Protect Your Eyes

If you're like an average office worker, you spend about 1

,700 hours a year in front of a computer screen every year without counting the hours you scroll with your phone, watch TV, or watch other devices.

This is a frightening statistic considering that the blue light emitted by our screens is associated with blurred vision, dry eye, sleep disorders and headaches. One way to deal with exposure to blue light is to obtain blue light-blocking glasses. You use filters to block or absorb blue light before it comes into contact with your eyes.

Wearing them during your workday can reduce eye strain, ward off headaches, and lead to better sleep.

Create visual resting points

If you speak of eye health, give your eyes a regular break. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the 20-20-20 rule: Look at an object that is at least 20 meters away for at least 20 seconds.

If your eyes or brain are really under pressure, stay away from your computer screen or records for two to five minutes. You can gently close your eyes, "roll" them to "stretch" them, or gaze at visual resting points that reassure you.

A visual resting place could include:

  • A photo you love – bonus points if it contains a scenic landscape or a gathering that brings you happy memories.
  • A floor system, a small table plant or a flower vase. Studies show that keeping green in your office can improve mood and productivity.
  • A work of art that you consider peaceful

The use of a window as a visual resting place is even better, as research shows that workers exposed to daylight tend to work out more and sleep better than those who do not have enough natural light.

Guarding the Carpal Tunnel

Although science is not clear whether desk jobs actually lead to a true carpal tunnel syndrome, most office workers know that typing for hours can lead to sore or stiff wrists, hands and forearms.

One of the easiest steps for a healthier workplace is to invest in a key pad, a mouse pad, or both. Amazon is home to many, but my favorite is the Gimars Memory Foam Set, which includes a keyboard pad and a mouse pad.

This set is lightweight but maintains its shape, perfect for a worker like me who often writes for hours. I've been using this Gimars set for the last few months, and I've found that my wrists and hands are clearly different at the end of a workday.

Improve Your Attitude

We know the benefits of ergonomic office furniture and standing desks but such a simple item as a lumbar cushion for your office chair can make a huge difference in your appearance overall attitude.

When I entered the office workers, I was not prepared for the disturbing time I would spend sitting every day. I started waking up with new pains in the neck and back, and short standing trips from my desk to my opposite height kitchen table were not enough to calm her down.

I invested in a simple memory foam lumbar pillow and it worked wonders. The benefits do not stop with your lower back: After using my lumbar pillow for a few weeks, I realized that my back, shoulders, and neck were less stiff.

Keep Things Clean

Have you ever wondered how and why you suddenly get sick? The offender could be snooping employees, or it could be a weird work environment.

Your mouse and keyboard could be more bacterial than a toilet seat and your desk surface can accommodate more than 20,000 bacteria per square inch. Disinfecting your work surfaces and equipment is the key to healthy work.

A simple disinfectant cloth or spray is suitable for hard surfaces such as desks and non-upholstered chairs, but the corners and corners of your equipment require a little more care. Try using Cleaning Sludge to remove dirt from your keyboard.

Also do not forget your phone – it can be up to 18 times dirtier than a public toilet. Try a product like PhoneSoap that uses UVC technology to kill germs and bacteria on the surface of your phone .

Bonus Tip: Stay Hydrated

In severe dehydration, this is a dangerous health complication that can lead to fainting, fever, and a rapid heartbeat.

Even moderate dehydration (which most adults in the US live with) results in a range of unwanted symptoms, including fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty concentrating and confusion – not exactly appropriate for a productive day at work.

Keeping a reusable water bottle at your desk reminds you that you always stay hydrated.
