The manufacturer of augmented reality platforms Zappar and its marker-based augmented reality technology were long ahead of Apple and Google, which brought brandless AR into mobile apps.
But as I said, if you can not beat them, then do it with you. On Thursday, Zappar ZapWorks introduced Studio 6, which includes several new features tuned to the capabilities of ARKit and ARCore.
Features include markerless World Tracking, which supports surface recognition capabilities on ARKit and ARCore-enabled devices. And like AR Foundation in Unity, ZapWorks will give developers the ability to build for both platforms and implement them through a single project, rather than developing separate versions for iOS and Android.
In addition, ZapWorks adds face tracking capabilities that allow developers to create their own Snapchat-like effects. The tool also includes the integration of Sketchfab, a tremendous improvement in the quality of life for developers who rely on their extensive library of 3D models.
"Sketchfab's mission has always been to make finding, publishing, and searching as easy as possible. Share 3D content with the world, as Zappar (and ZapWorks Studio) is one of our key partners in this mission into the AR world, "said Alban Denoyel, CEO of Sketchfab, in a statement.
ZapWorks Studio 6 also provides developers and publishers with a web-based AR solution based on the AR Quick view of ARKit and the experimental web-based ARCore's AR Protocol (not to mention) is matched by 8th Wall Web's cross-platform Web AR solution, which has recently supported some high-profile AR marketing campaigns.
"This new update is our most impressive release yet, making ZapWorks Studio one of the most versatile and scalable AR platforms currently available on the market, continuing our mission to be the most accessible, affordable, and richest toolkit for AR Developers around the world are developing, "said Caspar Thykier, CEO and co-founder of Zappar.
Despite the emergence of ARKit and ARCore, Zappar has managed to make a name for himself in marketing, especially in retail and packaged goods, where scanned markers are easy to implement and in terms of point-of-sale marketing are beneficial. So far, Zappar has provided the AR experience behind marketing campaigns for 7-Eleven, the NBA's Sacramento Kings, Shackleton Whiskey and Wise Snacks.
"ZapWorks Studio has become an indispensable tool for creating AR content for our clients – transforming their products, campaigns and ideas into interactive experiences that generate engagement, spontaneous media and financial returns," said Peter Maddalena, Director of VRCraftworks . "With each studio upgrade, we are better equipped with the strategic tools to create quality experiences and position ourselves as innovative and future-oriented for our customers – a win-win situation."
However, ARKit and ARCore add image recognition Features that make QR code-based markers obsolete are even more of a threat to Zappar's relevance. The advanced AR features in ZapWorks Studio 6 allow Zappar to remain relatively equal with competing AR toolkits, at least until Apple and Google publish and release their next extensions on their respective platforms.
